It's
a well-known fact ..
One
of the best ways to encourage children to read and take
an interest in books is to bring them face-to-face with
an author, illustrator, story-teller or poet.
But finding a good speaker isn't always easy; fixing dates
and finalising arrangements for the visit can be time
consuming - and if you're a busy teacher, librarian, literacy
advisor, or event organiser time is a precious commodity
Jan
Powling knows this
For
many years she organised National Book Festivals and conferences
as well as events in schools and colleges.
For 16 years she worked on a well-known Children's Book
Magazine and gained a reputation as a specialist children's
book seller.
She's
married to established children's author; Chris Powling,
who for 10 years was head of a London Primary school.
In
1997, at the suggestion of a number of people in the book
world, including the writers themselves, Jan set
up Speaking of Books.
And
now most leading writers, illustrators, and storytellers
can be contacted through Speaking of Books. Jan knows
them well and will give you reliable, informed advice
about getting the right speaker for your individual needs
